Making Monday Pretty: How to Pick the Perfect Red
Posted by Hayley French on
Fall is here, and what better way to welcome it than with the perfect red lip? We know finding the right colour for you is sometimes a little tricky, so here are a few tips to help you choose, along with some of our favourite reds.
1. Start by figuring out your undertones. The easiest way to do this is to look at the skin on your inner wrists, if your veins appear more blue, you have cool undertones, and if they appear more yellow or olive, you have warm undertones. Cool toned reds will have more blue in them and can appear to have more of a fuchsia, pink or raspberry undertone, whereas warm toned reds will lean more orange.
2. Start with a stain. If you're new to the world of red lipstick, try a sheerer formula or pat on your lipstick lightly with your ring finger and blot with a tissue so that all that remains is a stain. This is a good way to ease into a bright lip.
3. Prep accordingly. If you prefer the matte look, make sure to exfoliate and hydrate your lips as the matte finish has a drier consistency and will exaggerate any flaky or dry areas. If you prefer a glossy finish, make sure to really moisturize your lips beforehand because if your lips are dry, they will absorb the emollients in your lipstick or gloss causing it to wear away faster.
Ready to go red? Here are a few of our tried and true favourites, from left to right: Revlon Really Red (warm toned), NARS Audacious Lipstick in Lana (warm toned), Dior Addict Fluid Stick in Pandore (cool toned) , MAC Lipstick in Ruby Woo (neutral undertones, great for almost anyone!), NARS Pure Matte Lipstick in Vesuvio (warm toned), NARS Audacious Lipstick in Marlene (cool toned).
Have a beautiful Monday everyone!
